ARROWHEAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

THE MATCH-UP
The Chiefs return from training camp for their first appearance of the preseason in Kansas City when they host the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday at Arrowhead. The contest marks the second preseason outing for both clubs. Kansas City is coming off a 24-20 win at Chicago (8/7). QB Brodie Croyle led Kansas City’s first-unit offense on an impressive, 16-play, 85-yard drive to open the contest, while backup QB Tyler Thigpen threw a 27-yard TD to WR Bobby Sippio with 1:08 remaining to give KC the go-ahead points. Arizona is coming off a 24-10 loss vs. Arizona (8/7).

Head coach Herm Edwards has one of the NFL’s youngest squads, but boasts a defense led by Gunther Cunningham that ranked in the NFL’s top five in nine different different categories. The Chiefs led the league in third-down defense (31.3%) and forced a league-high 121 negative plays. KC also ranked second in the NFL in Red Zone defense (14.5 TD pct.).

While defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has an established unit on defense, new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s troops enjoyed a solid debut. Gailey has a trio of proven playmakers at his disposal, however. Nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez needs just 179 yards to overtake TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history, while two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson also returns. Meanwhile, second-year WR Dwayne Bowe led all NFL rookies with 70 catches and 995 yards in 2007.

Kansas City and Arizona both feature third-year signal callers who are attempting to solidify their status in 2008. For Kansas City Croyle (D3-06) holds virtually every career passing record in University of Alabama history. QB Matt Leinart was the 10th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft after winning back-to-back titles and the 2004 Heisman Trophy at USC. Arizona also has its own Pro Bowl runner at its disposal with RB Edgerrin James, who piled up 1,222 yards in 2007. Up next for the Chiefs is a road trip to Miami (8/23), while Arizona travels to Oakland (8/23) for its third preseason game.

In 23 previous preseason meetings vs. the Cardinals, KC is 1-0-1 at Municipal Stadium, 6-5 at Arrowhead, 5-3 at Busch Stadium and 0-1 at Sun Devil Stadium. Kansas City also won a 13-10 OT decision in a preseason contest in Memphis, TN (9/6/87).

The initial regular season contest between the two clubs came in ‘70 when the teams dueled to a 6-6 draw at Municipal Stadium. The Chiefs have won all four of their regular season meetings with Arizona at Arrowhead, getting wins in ‘74, ‘83, ‘98 and 2002.

The first NFL contest held at Arrowhead was a Governor’s Cup preseason match-up vs. the St. Louis Cardinals (8/12/72). RB Ed Podolak dove over the goal line for a one-yard TD with 4:51 elapsed in the second quarter of that game to mark the first ever score at Arrowhead. Podolak’s plunge sparked a 24-point second quarter that paved the way for a 24-14 Kansas City win in Arrowhead’s initial contest.
