THE MATCH-UPThe Chiefs return to Arrowhead for their 2008 regular season home opener as Kansas City hosts Oakland. Sunday’s game will be the 99th renewal of this bitter rivalry that dates back to ‘60. Kansas City suffered a narrow 17-10 loss on Opening Day at New England (9/7). Despite losing starting QB Brodie Croyle to a shoulder injury, QB Damon Huard guided the Chiefs to the Patriots fi ve-yard line with under a minute remaining, but the club was unable to crack paydirt for a game-tying or go-ahead score. Oakland is coming off a 41-14 loss on Monday night vs. Denver (9/8).
Kansas City has won nine of the last 10 contests in this AFC West feud, but the Raiders snapped a nine-game Chiefs winning streak in the series with a 20-17 win at Arrowhead (11/25/07) in the most recent meeting between these two teams. RB Kolby Smith made his fi rst NFL start in that contest in place of an injured RB Larry Johnson and promptly rattled off 31 carries for 150 yards and two TDs. However, Oakland stuffed Smith on a key fourth-and-one situation late in the game to seal the victory.
Johnson needs just 60 yards vs. the Raiders to overtake RB Christian Okoye (4,897) as the second-leading rusher in Chiefs history. Kansas City’s two-time Pro Bowl runner has averaged 105.7 rushing ypg in his last six meetings with the Raiders and owns fi ve career 100-yard contests against the Silver and Black. Meanwhile, nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez needs just 123 yards to surpass TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history.
While Kansas City has been dominant in the Chiefs-Raiders series of late, nine of the last 10 games in this AFC West duel have been decided by seven points or less with just 4.3 ppg separating the two teams during that 10-game span. The Chiefs defense has held the Raiders to just 18.3 ppg over those 10 contests and has held Oakland to 20 points or less in each of the last four meetings with the Silver and Black. Kansas City hits the road next week for an interconference clash at Atlanta (9/21), while Oakland travels to Buffalo (9/21).
THE SERIES
Kansas City owns a 52-44-2 advantage over Oakland in regular and postseason play. The Chiefs have also beaten Denver
52 times, tying for the most victories the Chiefs have accumulated against any opponent. The Chiefs own an eight-game
edge in the all-time regular season series between the two squads at 50-43-2 dating to the AFL’s inaugural season of
‘60. The Chiefs are 2-1 against Oakland in postseason play.
The Chiefs are 28-9 (.757) overall vs. the Raiders dating back to ‘90, including a ‘91 AFC playoff tilt. The Chiefs had a nine-game winning streak snapped last year at home against the Raiders, the longest victory stretch by either squad in the 49-year history of this series. That ninegame winning streak against the Raiders ranks as the second-longest mark by the Chiefs against any one opponent. Kansas City enjoyed an 11-game (’64-69) winning streak against Denver in American Football League play. Kansas City has registered a 14-4 (.778) regular season record against the Raiders at Arrowhead since ‘90. Oakland was victorious 20- 17 last season at Arrowhead despite Chiefs RB Kolby Smith registering a franchise-record by a rookie with 150 rushing yards and two TDs in his fi rst career start. Kansas City owns a pair of postseason wins against the Raiders, including a 17-7 win in the ‘69 AFL Championship Game (1/4/70) that sent the Chiefs to Super Bowl IV. Kansas City also claimed a 10-6 victory in the fi rst postseason contest played at Arrowhead (12/28/91).
