THE MATCH-UPKansas City returns to Arrowhead for an AFC West clash against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The Chiefs are coming off a 38-14 loss at Atlanta (9/21) and are seeking to register their initial victory of the season. KC did get RB Larry Johnson on track last week. The Chiefs two-time Pro Bowl runner racked up 121 yards against the Falcons, including 102 in the second half.
Denver is one of the NFL’s five undefeated clubs and is 3-0 for the sixth time under head coach Mike Shanahan. The Broncos are coming off a 34-32 victory vs. New Orleans (9/21) and lead the NFL in scoring at 38.0 ppg, but rank 28th in scoring defense, allowing 28.0 ppg.
Dating back to ‘95 the Chiefs have stopped a significant winning streak of an opponent (three games or more) 12 times at Arrowhead. Five of those streak-stopping games over that span have come against the Broncos, including a 31-27 win (12/4/05).
Chiefs nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez (10,011) needs just 50 yards to surpass TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history. He needs just four more yards against the Broncos to become the first tight end in league annals to own 1,000 career receiving yards against three different franchises (Denver, Oakland and San Diego).
Dating back to ‘94, six Chiefs-Broncos games at Arrowhead have been decided by a defensive or special teams score in the fourth quarter or OT. Kansas City has won four of those six contests. Denver has won four times in Kansas City in the regular season going back to ‘94 with two of those wins coming on FGs in OT. The Chiefs and Broncos have played five overtime games in the all-time series between the two teams, the most OT games of any opponent the Chiefs have faced.
Next week the Chiefs travel to Carolina (10/15) as KC plays on the road against the Panthers for the first time since ‘97 before enjoying a bye week on October 12th. Denver has back-to-back home dates vs. Tampa Bay (10/5) and vs. Jacksonville (10/12), rounding out a stretch of four home games in the season’s first six weeks for the Broncos.
THE SERIES
Kansas City holds a 52-44-0 (.542) all-time advantage over Denver in the 96 previous meetings between the two clubs
(95 regular season, one postseason). The Chiefs own 52 wins against the Broncos and the Raiders, the club’s highest
victory totals against any individual franchises. The Chiefs have won four of their last five meetings with the Broncos
at Arrowhead with Denver claiming a 27-11 victory on its last trip to Kansas City (11/10/07). The Broncos swept the
season series with the Chiefs a year ago for the first time since 2002. Denver also won a 41-7 decision at INVESCO
Field (12/9/07).
The Chiefs have won 13 of the last 18 regular season meetings between these two clubs at Arrowhead, including 10 of the last 13 contests. Kansas City hasn’t lost back-to-back regular season games to the Broncos at Arrowhead since dropping four straight from ‘76-79. The Broncos have won all seven games in the series played at INVESCO Field. Kansas City’s last win in Denver was a 23-22 victory at Mile High Stadium under head coach Gunther Cunningham.
Denver claimed a narrow victory in the lone playoff contest between these two original American Football League opponents, registering a 14-10 win in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Arrowhead (1/4/98).
