THE MATCH-UPThe Chiefs make their initial division road trip of the year when Kansas City visits San Diego on Sunday. Kansas City will be seeking to win back-to-back games at Qualcomm Stadium for the first time in 15 years. The Chiefs bounced back from a 16-6 halftime deficit to register a 30-16 victory in the club’s last visit to San Diego (9/30/07).
Herm Edwards’ squad is coming off a gut-wrenching 30-27 OT loss vs. Tampa Bay (11/2). The Chiefs jumped out to a 24-3 lead and forced four turnovers, but the Bucs returned a kickoff for a 97-yard TD and kicked a FG at the conclusion of the first half to narrow the halftime margin to 24-13. Trailing 27-19, Tampa Bay scored a 24-yard TD with 0:19 remaining in regulation and made a two-point conversion to send the contest to overtime. The Bucs won the OT coin toss and a 34-yard FG by K Matt Bryant gave Tampa Bay its only lead.
Despite suffering two straight comeback defeats, QB Tyler Thigpen has unquestionably given the Chiefs a lift. In his second and third NFL starts, he has completed 39 of 61 passes (63.9%) for 444 yards with three TDs and no INTs, numbers that equate to a 102.0 rating. Over that two-game span, the Chiefs defense has also forced seven turnovers (4 INTs/3 FRs). Kansas City has forced 18 turnovers in 2008, a total topped only by Chicago (19).
The Chargers enjoyed a bye after suffering a 37-32 loss vs. New Orleans (10/26) in a contest played in London. San Diego is seeking to avoid a three-game losing streak for the first time since 2003. A 24-10 Chargers win at Arrowhead (12/2/07), gave San Diego head coach Norv Turner his initial victory against the Chiefs in seven attempts. Turner is 1-6 against Kansas City as an NFL head coach: 0-1 with Washington, 0-4 with Oakland and 1-1 with San Diego. Edwards is 4-2 in regular and postseason action as a head coach at Qualcomm Stadium: 3-1 with the N.Y. Jets and 1-1 with Kansas City. Including a 4-1 regular season mark at Oakland, Edwards owns a 7-2 record as a head coach in regular season games played in the state of California.
Kansas City returns home for back-to-back contests vs. New Orleans (11/16) and Buffalo (11/23), while San Diego travels to Pittsburgh (11/16).
THE SERIES
Kansas City holds a 50-45-1 all-time advantage over San Diego in regular and postseason play. All 50 of those
victories against San Diego have come in regular season play. Kansas City is seeking to secure its 51st victory against
the Chargers. The only teams the Chiefs have defeated more frequently are Denver (53) and Oakland (52).
The Chiefs split their regular season series with San Diego a year ago. The Chiefs staged a monumental comeback in the first meeting between the two teams, rebounding from a 16-6 halftime deficit to claim a decisive 30-16 victory over the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium (9/30). That contest marked just the sixth time since ‘90 that a road team has overcome a double-digit deficit to register a victory of 10 or more points. WR Dwayne Bowe set a KC rookie record with 164 receiving yards. San Diego bounced back to take the rematch at Arrowhead by a 24-10 count (12/2/07).
96. Kansas City is seeking to win back-to-back regular season games at Qualcomm Stadium since winning four straight from ‘90-93.
Chiefs-Chargers matchups are traditionally closely-contested battles. Excluding one tie between the two teams, a total of 10 games in this series have been decided by exactly one point, the most of any series in the league since ‘60. The last such one-point game in this AFC West series resulted in a 35-34 Chargers win at San Diego (10/13/02). Interestingly, the initial meeting between these two squads was the first regular season game in the history of both franchises when the Dallas Texans lost a 21-20 decision to the L.A. Chargers at the L.A. Coliseum (9/10/60).
The Chiefs and Chargers have met just one time in postseason play. San Diego claimed a win in the lone playoff tilt between the two clubs, registering a 17-0 victory in a ‘92 AFC Wild Card Playoff Game at San Diego (1/2/93).
