THE MATCH-UPThe Chiefs will host the Saints in a regular season contest for the first time since ‘97. A pair of infrequent foes, the Chiefs and Saints will meet for just the ninth time in regular season competition on Sunday. The Saints 11-year drought without a regular season trip to Arrowhead is the longest current stretch any NFL club has gone without traveling to Kansas City. That 25-13 victory at Arrowhead in the ‘97 regular season finale was KC’s last win against the Saints (12/21/97). The only two foes the Chiefs have gone longer without defeating are Tampa Bay (9/5/93) and the N.Y. Giants (9/10/95).
The Chiefs have suffered three straight gut-wrenching losses with those contests being decided by a combined eight points. In each game, KC has held the lead or had a chance to win the game with under two minutes remaining. Last week, QB Tyler Thigpen orchestrated a 14-play, 60-yard TD drive that was capped with a three-yard TD pass to TE Tony Gonzalez with 0:23 remaining at San Diego (11/9). Head coach Herm Edwards went for the win, but the Chiefs two-point attempt fell incomplete as the Chiefs lost a 20-19 decision.
Over that three-game span, the Chiefs have registered nine takeaways (6 INTs/3 FRs) and are +8 (9 takes/1 give). On the season, only Tennessee at +10 (19 takes/9 gives) is better in the turnover department than Kansas City at +9 (20 takes/11 gives). Remarkably, no NFL team can top the Chiefs 20 takeaways thus far in 2008. In his last three starts, Thigpen has completed 66 of 102 passes (64.7%) of his passes for 710 yards with six TDs and no INTs, numbers that equate to a 104.6 rating. Only Colts QB Peyton Manning (seven) has registered more TDs over that span than KC’s passer, who has thrown 124 consecutive passes without an INT.
New Orleans (4-5) enters this week’s game seeking to stay within striking distance in the ultra-competitive NFC South behind Carolina (7-2), Tampa Bay (6-3) and Atlanta (6-3) The Saints are 4-5 after a 34-20 loss at Atlanta (11/9). Kansas City enjoys back-to-back home games for the first time this season when the club hosts Buffalo next week (11/23). New Orleans returns home for a Monday night contest vs. Green Bay (11/24).
THE SERIES
The all-time regular season series between the Chiefs and Saints is deadlocked at 4-4. Kansas City has won three of
its last five meetings with the Saints. New Orleans won its last contest against the Chiefs, getting a 27-20 victory at
the Louisiana Superdome (11/14/04) despite 186 rushing yards from Chiefs RB Derrick Blaylock. Dick Vermeil was KC’s
head coach, while Jim Haslett guided the fortunes of the Saints. The last regular season clash between the two teams at
Arrowhead came in the ‘97 regular season finale when Kansas City won a 25-13 decision as the Chiefs rounded out a 13-3
campaign that included a pristine 8-0 record at home (12/21/97). New Orleans’ last win at Arrowhead was a 17-10 victory
under head coach Jim Mora (9/8/91).
Kansas City is 4-4 all-time in preseason competition against the Saints. The Chiefs won the last such contest, 10-9 (8/31/06). The first meeting of any kind between the Chiefs and the Saints occurred during the ‘71 preseason when Kansas City registered a 27-7 preseason win at Tulane Stadium (8/21/71).
OH HENRY!
Hank Stram was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He compiled a 124-76-10 (.614) regular season
record as the Chiefs head coach from ‘60-74. “The Mentor” also matriculated on the Saints sidelines for two seasons
(’76-77), compiling a 7-21 mark. The finest moment in Chiefs history took place in New Orleans as Stram guided the
Chiefs to a 23-7 victory in Super Bowl IV vs. heavily-favored Minnesota in a contest played at Tulane Stadium (1/11/7).
Stram was also on the victorious side of two Chiefs-Saints match-ups, guiding Kansas City to a 20-17 win at New Orleans
(9/26/72) in the first-ever meeting between the two franchises. He also won his only meeting with the Chiefs as the
Saints head coach, getting a 27-17 triumph at Arrowhead (9/26/76).
