THE MATCH-UPThe 98th installment of the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry will take place on Sunday as Kansas City visits Oakland. The Chiefs will be seeking to become the first NFL team to ever win six consecutive road games against the Raiders. Kansas City has won five straight contests at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum with four of those five games being decided by seven points or less. The Chiefs will return to the site of their most recent road victory after registering a 12-10 win in their last visit to Oakland (10/21/07).
The Chiefs and Raiders both scored 31 points last week with the two teams seeing vastly different results. Kansas City is seeking its second victory of the season after suffering a 54-31 home loss vs. Buffalo (11/23). Meanwhile, the Raiders snapped a four-game losing streak after racking up a 31-10 win at Denver (11/23) thanks to 158 rushing yards and a pair of takeaways.
Despite last week’s loss, Kansas City racked up a season-high 462 yards of total offense, the club’s highest total since posting 499 yards vs. Seattle (10/29/06). However, KC could not overcome five turnovers vs. the Bills. In their four previous games, the Chiefs had taken the ball away 10 times and had committed just two turnovers. Last week’s game marked just the third time in 2008 that Kansas City failed to produce a takeaway. However, the Chiefs are still tied for fifth in the NFL with 21 takeaways (11 opponent FRs and 10 INTs).
Two of the Raiders three victories in 2008 have come against AFC West foes. In addition to last week’s road win vs. the Broncos, the Raiders also won their initial meeting of the year against the Chiefs by a 23-8 margin at Arrowhead (9/14). Oakland’s lone home win was a 16-13 OT vs. the N.Y. Jets (10/19).
Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen is the first KC signal caller to throw at least one TD pass in five straight games since QB Trent Green in 2004. Thigpen has thrown two or more TDs in each of his last three contests. Over his last five starts, Thigpen has thrown 11 TDs and just three INTs. Only Colts QB Peyton Manning has thrown as many TDs over that same span. Kansas City faces its final AFC West road trip of the season when the club travels to Denver (12/7) next week. Up next for the Raiders is a Thursday night contest at San Diego (12/4).
Kansas City owns a 52-45-2 advantage over Oakland in regular and postseason play. The Chiefs have beaten Denver 53 times, making the Broncos the only opponent Kansas City has defeated more frequently than the Raiders. The Chiefs own a six-game edge in the all-time regular season series between the two squads at 50-44-2 dating to the AFL’s inaugural season of ‘60. The Chiefs are 2-1 against the Silver and Black in postseason play.
The Chiefs are 28-10 (.737) overall vs. the Raiders dating back to ‘90, including a ‘91 AFC playoff tilt. Oakland has won the last two meetings against the Chiefs, including a 23-8 decision at Arrowhead (9/14). The Raiders are seeking their first three-game victory string against the Chiefs since registering five straight wins from ‘99-01. The Chiefs had a nine-game winning streak against the Raiders snapped last season, the longest victory stretch by either squad in the 49-year history of this series.
Kansas City owns a 9-4 (.692) regular season record at Oakland since ‘95. The Chiefs own five straight wins at Oakland, the longest stretch of consecutive road victories by Kansas City in this series. Kansas City claimed a 12-10 victory in its most recent contest at Oakland (10/21/07) as S Jarrad Page clinched the win with an INT of QB Daunte Culpepper with less than a minute remaining.
Kansas City owns a pair of postseason wins against the Raiders, including a 17-7 win in the ‘69 AFL Championship Game (1/4/70) that sent the Chiefs to Super Bowl IV. Kansas City also claimed a 10-6 victory in the first postseason contest played at Arrowhead (12/28/91).
