THE MATCH-UP

The Chiefs round out their 2008 division slate when San Diego visits Arrowhead on Sunday. The two clubs waged a fierce battle in their initial meeting of the year as San Diego escaped with a 20-19 victory when Kansas City eschewed a potential game-tying PAT to go for the win with a two-point attempt that fell short at Qualcomm Stadium (11/9). After KC’s defense forced the Chargers to go three-and-out, QB Tyler Thigpen and company took over at their own 40-yard line with 3:00 remaining. A 14-play TD march that included three third or fourth-down conversions set up the dramatic two-point try.

Kansas City is coming off a 24-17 loss at Denver (12/7). San Diego gets 10 days of rest coming into this contest after snapping a three-game losing streak with a convincing 34-7 win last Thursday vs. Oakland (12/4). The Chargers registered a 24-10 win in their most recent trip to Arrowhead (12/2/07), but haven’t won back-to-back games in Kansas City since ‘88-89. The home team has won seven of the last eight games in this series. The Chiefs have won nine of their last 10 division home games in the month of December with that lone blemish coming courtesy of the Chargers last season.

Thigpen has provided a spark for the Chiefs offense since making his second NFL start at the N.Y. Jets (10/26). He has opened KC’s last seven contests and has a pair of the league’s most dynamic pass catchers at his disposal. In fact, Kansas City (Gonzalez & Bowe), Denver (Marshall & Royal) and Arizona (Fitzgerald, Boldin and Breaston) are the only NFL clubs with two or more players among the NFL’s top 10 pass catchers in terms of receptions.

TE Tony Gonzalez is on pace for his fourth 90-catch, 1,000-yard season and with another 121 yards will become the first TE in NFL history with four 1,000-yard campaigns. Gonzalez has hit the 100-yard mark in three of his last five outings. WR Dwayne Bowe has more receptions (137) and receiving yards (1,842) than any other player in his first two seasons with the Chiefs. Bowe needs 153 yards to crack the 1,000-yard barrier after registering 995 receiving yards as a rookie in 2007. Kansas City is back at Arrowhead next week for a matchup with Miami (12/21), while San Diego travels to Tampa Bay (12/21).

THE SERIES
Kansas City holds a 50-46-1 (.521) all-time advantage over San Diego in regular and postseason play. All 50 of those victories against San Diego have come in regular season play. Kansas City is seeking to secure its 51st victory against the Chargers. The only teams the Chiefs have defeated more frequently are Denver (53) and Oakland (53).

San Diego has won the last two games in this series and is seeking its first three-game winning streak against the Chiefs since 2004-05. The Chargers won the first meeting this season by a 20-19 count at Qualcomm Stadium (11/9) and claimed a 24-10 decision last season at Arrowhead (12/2/07). The Chiefs have split their regular season series with San Diego each of the past two seasons.

k to ‘96. Kansas City owns a 10-3 (.769) record against the Chargers at Arrowhead dating back to ‘95, including a string of seven straight victories from ‘97-03. The Chiefs have won nine of the last 11 meetings with San Diego at Arrowhead.

Chiefs-Chargers matchups are traditionally closely-contested battles. Excluding one tie between the two teams, a total of 11 games in this series have been decided by exactly one point, including the most recent meeting. Those 11 one-point games are the most of any series in the league since ‘60. The initial meeting between these two squads was the first regular season game in the history of both franchises when the Dallas Texans lost a 21-20 decision to the L.A. Chargers at the L.A. Coliseum (9/10/60).

The Chiefs and Chargers have met just one time in postseason play. San Diego claimed a win in the lone playoff tilt between the two clubs, registering a 17-0 victory in a ‘92 AFC Wild Card Playoff Game at San Diego (1/2/93).
