THE MATCH-UP

The Chiefs and Bengals will both conclude their 2008 regular season schedules as Kansas City visits Cincinnati on Sunday. The Chiefs will make just their second-ever appearance at Paul Brown Stadium, a locale where the Bengals have registered two of their three victories this season. This week’s contest will mark just Kansas City’s third trip to Cincinnati since ‘87. It’s been 24 seasons since Kansas City last claimed a victory in the Queen City when the Chiefs registered a 27-22 victory at Riverfront Stadium (9/9/84).

Kansas City enters this week’s contest seeking to secure its third victory of the season after suffering a 38-31 loss vs. Miami (12/21). That setback marked the eighth time this season the Chiefs have lost a contest decided by seven points or less. Meanwhile, Cincinnati has constructed back-to-back wins after posting a 14-0 victory at Cleveland (12/21) and will be seeking its first three-game winning streak since 2006. The Bengals haven’t won three straight games to end a season since ‘97.

A pair of familiar sideline adversaries will square off in this contest. Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards began his NFL coaching career as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship with Kansas City in ‘89, while Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis worked in a similar capacity with the Chiefs in ‘91. Both coaches received those opportunities courtesy of Chiefs President Carl Peterson, who will conclude his 20-year association with Kansas City’s NFL franchise after this game.

The Chiefs boast a pair of players on the AFC Pro Bowl roster. G Brian Waters earned his fourth invitation to Hawaii, while TE Tony Gonzalez will be making his 10th consecutive appearance in the NFL’s All-Star Game. Gonzalez is the only tight end in league history with four 1,000-yard campaigns and needs just nine more receptions to register the second 100-catch season of his illustrious career. WR Dwayne Bowe is poised to become the eighth pass catcher in franchise history to post a 1,000-yard season, needing just 81 more yards to accomplish that feat after posting 995 yards as a rookie in 2007. If both Gonzalez and Bowe both top the 1,000-yard mark, it would mark just the third 1,000-yard receiving duo in a season in Chiefs history.

THE SERIES
Kansas City owns a slim 13-11 (.542) advantage in regular season play against Cincinnati. The Chiefs won the most recent contest by a 27-20 count at Arrowhead (10/14/07). Kansas City is still seeking its initial victory at Paul Brown Stadium, where the Bengals prevailed by a 24-19 margin (11/16/03) to snap the Chiefs nine-game winning streak to open the regular season.

Neither team has won back-to-back games in this series since the Chiefs claimed three straight wins from ‘83-86. The Chiefs and Bengals have split their last nine meetings in sequential order. KC’s last victory in Cincinnati was a 27-22 decision at Riverfront Stadium (9/9/84). The home team has won of the last five meetings in this series. Kansas City most recent win vs. Cincinnati came in the 2005 regular season finale as the Chiefs won 37-3 at Arrowhead (1/1/06).

The Chiefs initiated their all-time series with Cincinnati with a pair of contests in ‘68 when the Bengals entered the AFL as an expansion franchise. The Chiefs registered wins in four of the first five games in the series before Cincinnati proceeded to win five straight contests from ‘72-77. The two teams have never squared off in the postseason.

The Chiefs are 7-6 all-time at home against Cincinnati with a 5-6 mark at Arrowhead. In addition to registering a 37-3 victory in the 2005 regular season finale (1/1/06), Kansas City also defeated the Bengals at Arrowhead in ‘93 and ‘88. Perhaps the most significant game in the Chiefs-Bengals series came in ‘69. With starting QB Len Dawson already hurt, back-up QB Jacky Lee was injured vs. the Bengals, pressing third-stringer Mike Livingston into service. Although Kansas City lost 24-19 at Cincinnati (9/28/69), Livingston rallied the club for wins in his next five starts during the Chiefs storied Super Bowl IV season.
