Q&A with AMANI TOOMER - 8/4

Aug 04, 2009, 6:13:07 PM

Q: Did you have any workouts with any other teams? How did you end up here?

AMANI TOOMER: “No, I didn’t work out for any other teams. You look at the situation here, young team with a new coach with a great quarterback. It’s a great situation for me to be in and I’m happy to be here. It’s like you can see the excitement coming through here and how the coaches are trying to change the environment. It’s a good situation for me to be in. Just getting the chance to be around a lot of younger players and we got a lot of talent on this team.”

Q: How long does it take to get acclimated? You jumped in a few drills and got in pretty quickly. As a receiver is it a little quicker to pick up?

TOOMER: “I don’t know if it’s quicker. I’ve been in a lot of different offenses and this one’s another different one, but it’s going to be a challenge for me to get it all down in a quick period of time. I’ve got my work cut out for me, but I’m excited and I’m up to the challenge. I’m super excited to be here.”

Q: Why did it take you this long to get a job, Amani?

TOOMER: (Laughs) “Why don’t you cut to the chase, huh? I don’t know, I think the fact that I’m 34 had to play a little role in it. I can’t complain, I think it doesn’t matter. I’m here, I’m excited and that’s all that really matters.”

Q: Were you determined to play, did you consider retirement a little?

TOOMER: “No, I never considered retirement. I was working out the whole time. I felt like I have a lot left and I’m here to prove it.”

Q: A lot of people with you background would go chase another ring or something like that. You come to a team that is looking to rebuild, what attracted that to you?

TOOMER: “This league is up and down, you never know, who says I’m not chasing ring? Who says we can’t win one here? That’s kind of the way that I’m looking at it. The way the NFL is set up you can go from a two-win season to the Super Bowl. It’s possible, it’s happened and I think we have the players here and I think we have the belief here.”

Q: You know the Giants are on the schedule?

TOOMER: “Yeah, I know, Week Four.”

Q: That didn’t take long to see that?

TOOMER: “No, not at all.”

Q: What happened when you left the Giants?

TOOMER: “I think they are a great organization, I have nothing against them. They felt like they needed to move on. I agreed, I felt like I needed to move on. I don’t think that it was a good situation for me. I had 13 great years there, I can’t complain about anything. But they decided to move on, that’s it, and so did I.”

Q: Do you remember when it took teams longer to rebound and become contenders?

TOOMER: “I remember in ‘97 when I was with the Giants we went from six wins to winning the division and going to the playoffs. It’s possible, the games are always so close that it comes down to the little finer points of the game that determine whether you win or lose. It’s all about a little bit of luck and execution and preparation.”

Q: Physically, how different are you at 34 then when you were first coming into the league?

TOOMER: “I don’t know. I feel like I’m the same, I don’t know. I feel like I can run around and do everything I could do when I was a little bit younger.”

Q: What about the smarts part, how many tricks of the trade did you pick up in 13 years?

TOOMER: “I have a few; I have a few tricks up my sleeve. You don’t stay around unless you pick up a few things. I’m happy to be here and we have a receiving core that I could help out.”

Q: Were you confident that you were going to get a call even as training camps around the league had started?

TOOMER: “Yeah, I definitely thought I was going to play. I kept working out like I was going to play. It bothered me ego-wise, but other than that I kept going and doing my thing and I’m here now so it all doesn’t really matter.”
