50 Years of Chiefs History: Governor's Cup
Aug 21, 2009, 8:49:57 AMAUGUST 17 – 23
The Governor’s Cup annually matches the
Kansas City Chiefs against the team from St. Louis in the preseason. Kansas City holds an 18-12-1 record in the
preseason against the Cardinals (’68-87) and the Rams (’96-08) during their respective tenures in St. Louis. The Chiefs
also own a combined 6-1-1 record against those two clubs in regular season Governor’s Cup matchups. The series began on
August 17, 1968 when the Cardinals traveled across the state to play the Chiefs in Kansas City at Municipal
Stadium.
In a match-up between teams from the American Football League and the National Football League, Kansas City jumped to the early lead. Behind a 37-yard K Jan Stenerud field goal, the Chiefs took a 3-0 lead on the first possession of the game. St. Louis responded with a 38-yard field goal to tie the score at 3-3 to end the first quarter.
Kansas City failed to turn two missed field goals and a turnover by St. Louis into any second quarter points as the clubs remained tied at the half. In the third quarter, St. Louis converted a Kansas City turnover into seven points. Former Kansas State FB Willis Crenshaw scored on a one-yard run to give the Cardinals a 10-3 lead.
The Red and Gold responded later in the third quarter when RB Wendell Hayes had a one-yard TD run. On the Chiefs first possession of the fourth quarter Stenerud added his second field goal of the day, this one coming from 24-yards out. Kansas City dodged a pair of bullets in the fourth quarter when St. Louis missed a pair of FGs, as the Chiefs hung on for a 13-10 victory.
