THE MATCH-UP

The Chiefs travel to St. Louis for their annual Governor’s Cup outing vs. the Rams as both clubs conclude their preseason schedule at the Edward Jones Dome on Thursday (9/3). Kansas City has suffered three narrow preseason losses by a combined 14 points. The Chiefs are coming off a 14-10 setback vs. Seattle (8/29). CB Brandon Flowers accounted for KC’s TD on a 28-yard INT return on a pass that was tipped by rookie DE Tyson Jackson, who also registered a sack in the contest.

Despite being outscored by its opponents by a 61-60 margin through three preseason contests, St. Louis is currently 2-1 on the strength of a pair of three-point wins. The Rams are coming off a 24-21 victory at Cincinnati (8/27).

Kansas City and St. Louis both boast fi rst-year NFL head coaches who are attempting to resurrect the fortunes of their respective franchises. Chiefs head coach Todd Haley arrived in Kansas City after helping guide the Arizona Cardinals to a berth in Super Bowl XLIII. In his fi nal season as the Cardinals offensive coordinator in 2008, the club won its fi rst division title since ‘75 and reached the NFL’s title game for the fi rst time since ‘47.

Meanwhile, St. Louis head coach Steve Spagnuolo joined the Rams after serving as the defensive coordinator on a N.Y. Giants squad that claimed a 17-14 win vs. New England in Super Bowl XLII. During the 2007 campaign, the Giants racked up a league-high 53.0 sacks. With Spagnuolo leading the New York defense in 2008, the Giants posted a 12-4 record to win a division title against an NFC East fi eld in which all four teams fi nished .500 or better.

Thursday’s game is one fi nal opportunity to evaluate the squad before the NFL’s mandatory cutdown to 53 players on September 5th. All NFL clubs are required to trim their rosters to 75 players on Tuesday, September 1st. Kansas City begins the regular season at Baltimore (9/13), while St. Louis opens at Seattle (9/13).
