RB LARRY JOHNSON
Talk about the offensive performance of the team today, why did you struggle?
“I don’t know. We just didn’t capitalize on the defense starting out pretty good and we just couldn’t keep up after that.”

How tough was it to start in a 14-0 hole? “It’s real tough to get anything going when you’re in a hole that quick, that fast. The most you can do is try to salvage the rest of the game or the rest of the players by eliminating the little mistakes we made on offense.”

You guys were hoping to build off last week. Did this outing blindside you guys? “I think it did. I don’t know what was going through our heads at the time. I don’t know whether it was false happiness or thinking that we were going to come in and San Diego was just going to lay down because they just played the Monday night game, I don’t know what it was.”

How much did you guys want to win one at home for the fans? “We wanted to win period. At the end of the day it’s always us. We come back into the locker room and we have to deal with us, the wins and losses. I think we just wanted to get a win period and keep building off of what we did last week.”

NT RON EDWARDS
Is this loss something they did, or is this what you guys did not do?
“Again, like I said, we have to watch film and see how it goes, see how it turns out.”

How tough was the 14-0 deficit to overcome? “It’s always tough.”

Do you ever ask yourself, ‘When is losing is going to stop?’ so you can talk about positive things? “Of course we feel that. We just feel like we need to get the ball rolling. It felt like we got it rolling last week and we could continue this week, but it just didn’t turn out right away. We just have to check it out and see what’s going on.”

How much did you guys want to win for the home fans? “A lot. We want to win for the home fans, us, everybody watching. It’s painful. It’s real painful.”

Do you feel like you guys are making progress or is that still a thorn in your side? “Again we just have to go back and take a look at the film and see how they hit us and when they hit us to see exactly what went wrong.”

RB JAMAAL CHARLES
Did the offense seem flat today?
“Well, we tried to go out there and execute all the plays that Coach (Haley) called but we were out there dropping balls, overthrowing wide receivers, not opening holes for the backs, so we just have to get together as an offense and go out there and make plays and not give up when we’re down, always fight until the end.”

Is it tough because you thought you took a step forward as a offense last week? “Yeah, we wanted to come in and win the game, especially at home, but then we come in and played an embarrassing game. We did horrible. We wanted to come home and make the fans happy but they were disappointed today.”

You guys seemed flat, emotionally. What was the emotional state of the team heading into this game? “We had a lot of confidence because we were just coming off a win. We wanted to come in [and win] for the fans. We were pumped at the opening kickoff, we started out big. I don’t know what happened then, but we just lost it.”

DE GLENN DORSEY
You had high hopes coming off last week’s win, but things seemed to fizzle today?
“Yeah, we just didn’t play well at all. Nobody did. You can’t come out and play like that and think you’re going to win. It’s a bad loss, it hurt. We just have to rally together and get better this bye week and just get ready for the rest of the season.”

Did they do anything to surprise you? “No, there weren’t many surprises there. We just didn’t make plays when we needed to. It was a missed tackle or a missed contain and you can’t do that. They have a lot of good weapons, they like to get RB LaDainian Tomlinson the ball, they have RB Darren Sproles and TE Antonio Gates, and we just didn’t do what we needed to. We have to get better.”

It seemed like a roller coaster sometimes, goal-line stands but also giving up big plays? “We have got to be consistent. And Coach Todd Haley preaches that everyday, being consistent, don’t be a roller coaster, don’t be an up and down player, and we didn’t do that today. That’s our objective, try to come out next week and do better.”

How tough is it giving up those big plays early, seems like that would be real tough on the defense? “You have to do what you know and keep playing. We started doing some good things towards the end and we kind of hold our heads down because we should have had a lot more time in the game. That’s the biggest thing, you just have to come out and play, when it’s your turn, you’ve got to play.”

How deflating is it when they make those big plays like that? “You don’t want to give up big plays, that’s one of our goals. When they do, it’s discouraging, but you have a lot more game to play and you just have to keep on working.”
