Rookie Club Celebrates Veterans Day During WWI Museum "Field Trip"
Nov 11, 2009, 4:03:24 PMIn observance of Veterans Day, the Kansas City Chiefs and
its Rookie Club recently toured an iconic Kansas City landmark with some local students. Flanked by youth from Derrick
Thomas Academy, the rookies explored the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial. As they learned more about
the “War to End All Wars,” everyone involved seemed to better appreciate the sacrifices those in the service continue
to make on a daily basis. Better yet, thanks to a grant made by the Chiefs prior to this visit, the team ensured that
future visitors would also have a meaningful experience.
The Team’s $5,000 grant to the Museum will be used to produce a “Family Guide.” A Veteran’s Day gift, the hands-on tool created by these funds will make quite a mark. That’s because the Family Guide will be a resource to help kids learn about the Museum’s world-class collection, why it matters, and lessons from this important time in history. The free Family Guide will be available at the Museum and online and will enrich the experience of thousands of visitors to the nation’s only Museum dedicated to the Great War.
“We are truly honored to be here, representing the entire Chiefs organization.” Team President Denny Thum said before touring the Museum. “Our hope is that these monies will allow you to continue telling the story of this tumultuous time in world history, and honor the memory of all that have served.”
“You don’t have big shoes to fill, you just have your own shoes to wear,” noted another special guest, Dr. Pellom McDaniels III. A former Red and Gold teammate of Derrick Thomas and a current trustee of the National World War I Museum, he had quite a perspective on the day’s events for the 16 Chiefs rookies and DTA students in attendance. Recently, McDaniels penned a curriculum entitled “They Came to Fight” which explores the impact of African Americans on WWI.
In its 10th year of existence, the Chiefs Rookie Club was the first of its type, but has now become commonplace throughout the NFL. The goal of the group is to introduce these players to community organizations in their new hometown as a group. The rookies will make a total of 10 community outreach visits throughout the course of the year.
The National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial inspires thought, dialogue, and learning to make the experiences of the World War I era meaningful and relevant for present and future generations. This museum provides a setting where adults can talk with kids about not only history – but the important concepts of patriotism, honor, courage, sacrifice and service to one’s country. Officially designated as the National World War I Museum by the 108th Congress, the facility is the only American museum solely dedicated to preserving the objects, history, and personal experiences of a war whose impact still echoes in our world today.
