"Chiefs Cleats for Kids" Drive This Week
Nov 30, 2009, 6:10:13 AMTeam up with the Kansas City Chiefs and help some local
youth football players. The Chiefs are joining the Derrick Thomas Academy, Kansas City Missouri School District, and
Kansas City Pop Warner to make a difference while promoting the Play60 message.
Together, we are collecting both new and used youth football equipment - such as cleats, practice jerseys and pants - for some deserving local kids. If you’d like to donate items, we invite you to bring them to the Chiefs tilt against the Denver Broncos on December 6th. There will be collection boxes located at the Gates C & G turnstiles of Arrowhead Stadium. If you would like to make a donation, we ask that you stop by one of these Chiefs Cleats for Kids drop locations sometime before kickoff.
If you’d prefer, you can also bring these Chiefs Cleats for Kids donation items to the Chiefs Front Office during normal business hours (8:30 AM – 5:00 PM).
The Chiefs Cleats for Kids drive is just one way the team is promoting the Play60 message at this weekend’s game. As fans take their seats, they’ll notice that the Play60 logo appears on the field, goal post pads and on stadium banners. Play60-branded messages will also be a part of that day’s game production as Play60 tips encircle the field on the LED ring while PSAs play on Arrowvision. During pregame ceremonies, the Chiefs will also recognize 11 youth from Derrick Thomas Academy that epitomize the Play60 message.
Play60 is one way that the team is committed to continuing the fight against childhood obesity. The NFL’s movement for an active generation, Play60 encourages youth to get at least 60 minutes of activity and play each day. According to findings released earlier this year at a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “Obesity Conference,” the prevalence of obesity rose 37% between 1998 and 2006. The average American consumes about 250 calories more a day now than two decades ago and is about 23 pounds overweight. In addition to the Chiefs Cleats for Kids drive and corresponding game day activities, the Chiefs also promote Play60 through such programs as the Chiefs Sports Lab “in-school” program and the Play60 Challenge.
The Chiefs efforts to promote and expand youth football are at the forefront of the organization’s focus. Over the past 11 years the Chiefs have donated $1.85 million for local field refurbishments and/or construction. One example is the Chiefs Youth-Specific field. Built with a state-of-the-art Sprinturf playing surface, the facility is just the second of its kind located at an NFL team’s official training facility. In the shadows of Arrowhead Stadium it enables all youth who use it to dream big and feel as though they are a part of the Chiefs themselves.
