THE MATCH-UPThe Chiefs enter the second leg of a three-game home stand with a contest vs. Buffalo. A pair of original American Football League foes, these two franchises are both proudly celebrating their 50th anniversaries in 2009. The league was the brainchild of Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt, whose Dallas Texans franchise moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs in ‘63. Hunt was the inaugural AFL figure inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in ‘72. Buffalo Chairman Ralph Wilson, Jr. was also a member of the “Foolish Club” and was the most recent member of the AFL enshrined in Canton as part of the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2009.
Kansas City has won two of its last four contests under first-year head coach Todd Haley. The Chiefs have been involved in six games decided by seven points or less. The Chiefs are coming off a 44-13 loss vs. Denver (12/6). Buffalo is still seeking its second victory under head coach Perry Fewell, who took over the Bills fortunes on November 17th. Buffalo has lost four of its last fi ve contests, including a 19-13 setback vs. the N.Y. Jets (12/3), in a contest that was played in Toronto. The Bills are 4-8 on the season, but four of those losses have come by a combined 13 points.
The Bills last visit to Kansas City resulted in a 54-31 victory for Buffalo (11/23/08), the most points the Chiefs ever allowed in a single contest. Under Haley, the Chiefs have made strides in revamping their defense. Kansas City currently ranks eighth in the league, forcing three and outs on 25.7% (39 of 152) of opponents’ possessions. At the 12-game mark of the 2008 campaign, KC ranked 31st in that department, forcing three and outs just 18.0% of the time (25 on 139 drives). KC’s defense is seventh in the AFC on third down at 37.5% after ranking 31st in the NFL after 12 games in 2008 at 46.5%.
Offensively, RB Jamaal Charles has scored a TD on offense or on special teams in four consecutive games. Over that four-game span, Charles has 88 touches for 730 combined net yards and fi ve TDs, an impressive average of 182.5 combined net yards per game. KC concludes its three-game home stand vs. Cleveland (12/20), while Buffalo is home vs. New England (12/20).
THE SERIES
The Chiefs have posted a 17-22-1 (.438) record in regular and postseason play against Buffalo, including a 16-20-1
(.446) mark in regular season games. Kansas City has won two of the last three meetings between these two original AFL
foes at Arrowhead. Buffalo won the last meeting in Kansas City by a 54-31 count (11/23/08) and also claimed a 14-3
decision in the most recent contest at Ralph Wilson Stadium (11/13/05). Kansas City’s most recent victory in the series
was a 38-5 victory at Arrowhead (10/26/03).
The Chiefs and Bills have met 12 times in regular season and playoff action since ‘90, with the home squad winning 10 of those 12 contests. Kansas City holds a 6-4 record vs. Buffalo at Arrowhead, including a 5-2 mark since ‘90. The Chiefs are just 1-9 all-time against the Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium and hold a 6-13-1 record in Buffalo since the inception of the two teams in ‘60. Kansas City’s longest winning streak in this series was a six-game stretch from ‘66-71.
The Chiefs are 1-2 in playoff action against the Bills, including a 31-7 victory in the ‘66 AFL Championship Game at Buffalo’s War Memorial Stadium (1/1/67), a win that propelled Kansas City to a berth in Super Bowl I. The date is also signifi cant in Chiefs history since it was the birthdate of the late LB Derrick Thomas who was born in Miami, Florida that same day.
Thomas was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2009 along with former Bills DE Bruce Smith and Bills Chairman Ralph Wilson, Jr. Late Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt and Wilson were both members of the whimsically-named eight-man “Foolish Club” that launched the American Football League which began play in ‘60. Hunt’s squad claimed AFL titles in ‘62, ‘66 and ‘69, while Buffalo won back-to-back AFL crowns in ‘64-65.
