THE MATCH-UPThe Chiefs host the Browns for the first time since 2003 as Cleveland visits Arrowhead in Kansas City’s 2009 home finale on Sunday. The Chiefs are 7-2 in regular season home finales dating back to 2000 and will host a Browns squad that hasn’t won at Arrowhead since ‘88. This week’s contest closes out a threegame home stand for Kansas City.
Much has changed since these two franchises last met in December of 2006. Both teams have new head coaches in Todd Haley (Chiefs) and Eric Mangini (Browns). Of the 22 starters for Kansas City in that contest, only three of those players remain with the franchise: G Brian Waters, LB Tamba Hali and DT Ron Edwards. In fact, only four other players on the club’s 53-man roster that day remain on Kansas City’s current roster: QB Brodie Croyle, P Dustin Colquitt, LB Derrick Johnson and C Rudy Niswanger.
The Chiefs have explored any means necessary to upgrade their talent since the season began. A total of 67 different players have spent at least one game on Kansas City’s 53-man roster, while 43 different players have started at least one contest for the Chiefs this season. Of the players on the Chiefs roster (excluding practice squad and reserve lists) as of December 14th, 42 of those players were with KC on Opening Day at Baltimore (9/13).
Kansas City is coming off a 16-10 loss vs. Buffalo (12/13), while Cleveland snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 13-6 home win vs. Pittsburgh (12/10). The Browns are the third straight opponent to enjoy a 10-day span before facing the Chiefs. RB Jamaal Charles again served as the Chiefs offensive spark plug, registering career highs with 181 yards from scrimmage and 143 rushing yards vs. the Bills. He added a 76-yard TD scamper which tied as the seventh-longest run in franchise history. KC’s defense forced three turnovers for the second straight week. Meanwhile, LB Tamba Hali upped his season sack total to 7.5 after producing 4.0 sacks in his last two contests.
The Chiefs close out the regular season with back-to-back road games at Cincinnati (12/27) and at Denver (1/3). Cleveland finishes the 2009 campaign with home contests vs. Oakland (12/27) and vs. Jacksonville (1/3).
THE SERIES
The all-time regular season series between Kansas City and Cleveland is deadlocked at 9-9-2 (.500). The two clubs have
never met in the postseason. The Browns claimed a 31-28 OT win in the most recent contest between the two franchises at
Cleveland (12/3/06). The Chiefs won a 41-20 decision in the most recent outing between the two franchises at Arrowhead
(11/9/03). That victory marked the ninth consecutive victory of the year for Kansas City as the Chiefs began the 2003
season with a franchise-best 9-0 record.
The Chiefs are 7-2-1 (.750) at home vs. the Browns, including a 6-2-1 (.722) mark at Arrowhead. The Chiefs also notched a 13-7 win in the only contest played between the two squads at Municipal Stadium (11/14/71). KC is just 2- 7-1 (.250) at Cleveland, claiming the club’s most recent victory there by a 40-39 count as a defensive penalty on the final play from scrimmage set up K Morten Andersen’s game-winning 30-yard FG.
Neither team has ever won three straight games in this series. Kansas City won back-to-back games in ‘71-72 and 2002-03, while Cleveland did so in ‘79- 80 and ‘86 and ‘88. Kansas City holds the only shutout victory of the series, blanking the Browns with a 34-0 triumph at Arrowhead (9/30/90).
The most memorable contest between the two clubs at venerable Cleveland Stadium came in ‘89 when Marty Schottenheimer made his return to Cleveland as Kansas City’s head coach. With the score tied at 10-10, normally surefooted K Nick Lowery missed a 39-yard FG at the end of regulation and a 47- yarder with 0:17 left in OT, leaving the game deadlocked in a 10-10 stalemate. The Chiefs and Browns have tied twice, meaning the only club Kansas City has tied more frequently than Cleveland is New England (three times). KC’s lone win at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium came by a 31-7 count (10/8/72) when the club was led by Hall of Fame QB Len Dawson, a native of Alliance, Ohio.
