Former Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer will be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010 on Sunday, January 31st in Springfield, Missouri. He will become the third Chiefs head coach to be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Hank Stram (’96) and Dick Vermeil (2001).

“On behalf of our entire family, we congratulate Marty on his selection to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame,” Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt said. “Marty was an outstanding head coach for the Chiefs franchise and continues to be a tremendous friend of our family. His induction is certainly well deserved.”

During his 10-year stint with the Chiefs (’89-98), Schottenheimer registered a 101-58-1 (.634) regular season record giving him the most victories in franchise history. His tenure with Kansas City included three division titles, seven playoff appearances and a trip to the ‘93 AFC Championship Game. During his 21-year career as an NFL head coach, Schottenheimer compiled a 200-126-1 (.631) regular season record. The four coaches in NFL history with more regular season victories than Schottenheimer are all enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Don Shula (328), George Halas (318), Tom Landry (250) and Curly Lambeau (226).

Schottenheimer will join five of his former Chiefs players in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. That group includes RB Marcus Allen (2001), S Deron Cherry (2002), RB Christian Okoye (2003), DE Neil Smith (2008) and G Will Shields (2009).

In addition to Schottenheimer, Northwest Missouri State Head Coach Mel Tjeerdsma will be a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010. Currently in his 15th season at Northwest, Tjeerdsma is the winningest coach in program history with nine MIAA Championships and two NCAA Division II National Championships. His squad made its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II National Championship Game appearance in 2009, as Northwest Missouri State won its third national title during Tjeerdsma’s tenure.
