SUNDAY’S PICK?
February 5th – 6:08 AM

We’ve made it nearly two full weeks without talking Super Bowl, not even once. There has been plenty of Chiefs talk since the conference championship games to keep us all busy, despite the team wrapping up the 2009 season over a month ago (thank goodness for the Senior Bowl and the coaching staff press conference).

Finally, let’s take a look at the “Big Game.”

Have you had enough Super Bowl analysis over these past two weeks? If you’re like me, you’re looking forward to the game this weekend, but you’re a bit sick of hearing minute-by-minute updates about Dwight Freeney’s ankle and who performed karaoke to which song on media row’s Super Bowl Idol (don’t act like you didn’t watch it).

http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/players-singing-karaoke-at-media-day

The unique coverage isn’t complete irrelevant, we did all learn this week that Freeney is going for long, shoeless walks on the beach in order to prepare his torn ankle ligaments for the rigors that await when trying to speed rush Jermon Bushrod. Life could be worse, I’d assume. I’d also assume that Freeney finds a way to get his banged up ankle in the backfield this Sunday.

Really, from a Chiefs perspective, there isn’t a whole lot going on with the game this weekend. Pre and post-Super Bowl, however, is a completely different story. The Chiefs are going sandwich the spotlight this Sunday.

G Brian Waters is one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. The winner will be announced live on the field by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell moments before the start of Super Bowl XLIV.

The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is the only league award that recognizes a player’s off-the-field community service as well as his playing excellence.

That’s before the coin toss, but after the final whistle the Chiefs will once again take the field when our very own Len Dawson carries out the Lombardi Trophy to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at mid-field. Dawson will continue the tradition of Super Bowl legends participating in the Lombardi Trophy ceremony, which began with Bart Starr’s participation in Super Bowl XL.

Overall, it’s been a great week to honor the 40th anniversary of Kansas City’s Super Bowl IV victory over Minnesota. At Arrowhead, the Super Bowl XLIV week began with the return of Super Bowl IV participant and play-maker Emmitt Thomas to Kansas City and will with “Lenny The Cool” handing out the hardware.

On the field, a few familiar faces will line up in an effort to call themselves a world champion for the next year. Former Chiefs in this Sunday’s contest include LB Scott Fujita of the Saints and G Ryan Lilja of the Colts (we can half-claim a starting point with Lilja’s NFL career since he was a training camp guy in Kansas City, played collegiately at Kansas State and prepped at Shawnee Mission Northwest – let me guess, you’re wondering how Lilja didn’t make at least a reserve role with the Chiefs as a CFA back in 2004?).

Okay, so what about the actual game itself? Who are you taking?

Personally, I think that the Saints offense presents quite a matchup for this Colts defense. The Colts have been teetering on the side of average-to-below average on the defensive side of the football all season long and haven’t exactly seen any offensive juggernauts over their last six weeks of football (and you could argue much longer than that).

This matchup with the Saints offense reminds me a lot of when the Colts took on Houston way back at the end of November. The Texans got out to that early 17-0 lead against Indy, but the great wildcard known simply as “Manning” still found a way to trump all.

Who knows, really? It should be a great game this Sunday. I’ll give out my official pick later today in the “Break It Down” video if you must know.

But instead of boring you with game breakdowns that you’ve likely heard 945,009 times by now in the round-the-clock Super Bowl coverage, I’ve got some unique facts that I’ve collected over the past two days which may be new to you.

Here are a handful of Super Bowl facts that I found to be particularily interesting:

• The team wearing the white jersey has won five Super Bowls in a row (Saints wearing white on Sunday?)

• The last three Super Bowls played in Miami haven’t been close – an average margin of victory at 16.7 points

• Joe Namath is the only quarterback in Super Bowl history to win game MVP honors without throwing a TD pass (17-of-27 for 206 yards with 0 TDs and 0 INTs in Super Bowl III)

• Tickets to the Super Bowl I cost $6 and the game didn’t sell out (Chiefs lose to Packers 35-10)

• Good thing the Saints beat the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game, because Minnesota has never led a second of the four Super Bowls they’ve played in

• This will be the ninth time that two number one seeds meet in the Super Bowl (the last time was Dallas/Buffalo in 1993)

• The other Manning, Eli, is the only quarterback to win a Super Bowl wearing #10

Basically, throw the stats out the window. It’s the Super Bowl!
